“You Can’t Bring Your Cat to Work”: A Critique
In “You Can’t Bring Your Cat to Work” (Cripe, 2017), a qualitative communication
research method is adopted. Typically, Cripe explicitly offers an exploratory characterization of study in question: “[T]his study explores some of the factors contributing to women’s difficulty combining breastfeeding and working [emphasis added]” (p. 36). That is, Cripe attempts to offer an interpretive account of why working mothers have lower breastfeeding rates compared to stay at home mothers in US workplace context.
The study’s results reflect a rigorous research approach maintained all along. Generally, evaluations of qualitative research results recommend six major criteria: (i) Communication of methodological awareness evidenced by an audit trail, (ii) Sampling strategy, sample size, and data or theoretical saturation, (iii) Member‐checking procedures, (iv) Reflexivity, (v) Ethical considerations and (vi) Transferability or Generalizability (Anderson, 2017). Two criteria, (i) and (iii), are discussed for current purposes.
