Leadership: A Reflection Journal
Leadership is, I have to understand and learn, is a long, evolving journey. Taking formal
sessions on leadership is hardly effective, not to mention insightful, about developing critical leadership skills for Marines. Instead, a combination of science and art is required. To do so, leadership should be studied and developed among junior Marines not so much as a formalized form of skills every Marines should know. Instead, leadership should be developed in more spontaneous, informal ways such as to ensure learning and development is friendly and participate. If anything, leadership is not identifiable, I have come to understand, by any single definition or, for that matter, a philosophy. In fact, mentoring and counseling offer more effective and, perhaps meaningful, ways to develop leadership skills among Marines. More specifically, mentoring and counseling, intended to convey leadership skills in more informal ways, are, in contrast to more formalized forms of leadership development forms, provide mutiple benefits for giving and receiving sides.
For mentoring, senior leaders, I have come to understand, act less as instructors per se and more as facilitators. That is, in developing certain leadership skills and enhancing specific principles, senior leaders help juniors gain such skills and embrace such principles in more friendly and open ways compared to formalized leadership settings. In fact, mentoring is a practice, I have come to learn, everyone can do. This makes mentoring a universal mode of leadership learning and, perhaps more importantly, a more effective way to make junior Marines more willing and proactive to be future successful leaders....
