In almost all states, special laws and rules and regulations regarding the treatment of juveniles have been introduced. Cases of murder, street crimes, and incarceration are handled carefully, and a juvenile officer remains forefront throughout the process. He is primarily responsible for working with troubled youth who are convicted of crimes and have been sent to the jail for further proceedings (Moffitt, 2009, p. 31). The specific skills and characteristics of officers working with juveniles are excellent communication skills, problem-solving skills, and selflessness. Plus, they should be able to work with arrogant and aggressive juveniles as sometimes they come across juveniles who are not ready to listen to them. These officers need to possess outstanding social skills too since they are often required to work in a team, and need to support each other throughout the case (Macias et al., 2010).
A successful juvenile officer should be ready to handle uncertainties, must process information quickly, and be able to weigh evidence with the intuition before taking action. They would have to dedicate themselves to the job, need to be flexible and have an open and sharp mind. Every person who wants to work as a juvenile officer needs to practice staying calm and quiet before opting for this profession as it is full of challenges and obstacles. I strongly believe that working with juveniles is far more difficult than working with adults since most of the youth are emotional and react to situations with uncertainty. Thus, it is essential to gain sufficient knowledge regarding how to work with juveniles and how to collect evidence about the case (Moffitt, 2009).
The correctional system in the United States aims to keep crimes out of the streets, and when it comes to handling the adults and juveniles, officers should consider the age of the victim as well as go through the case history.
