Intrinsic Value of Beaches in Literature
Environmental sustainability is a key global issue in modern society. Beaches are among the ecosystems that are under threat from the human activities that degrade the environment. The current state of the global environment hastened during and after the industrial revolution pitting leading to both economic growth and development and cases of global warming and climate change outcomes. Therefore, there is a need for concerted effort to enhance the sustainability of our ecosystem. In economic terms, the value of beaches can be evaluated. However, this evaluation, more than often, does not capture the intrinsic value of beaches to human societies. Literature provides an avenue through which we can understand the intrinsic value of beaches without the necessarily worrying about statistics.
A key value of beaches is that they connect us to the oceans that cover the most part of the earth. In The Open Boat, Crane (1894) shows the power of the sea to bring people together, regardless of the differences they harbor against each other.
It would be difficult to describe the subtle brotherhood of men that was
here established on the seas. No one said that it was so. No one mentioned
it. But it dwelt in the boat, and each man felt it warm him. They were a
captain, an oiler, a cook, and a correspondent, and they were friends,
friends in a more curiously iron-bound degree than may be common.
From the excerpt, these are men who united by the common goal of conquering the waves of the sea. They are people with different backgrounds, different opinions, and different professions united by a single goal.
