Intercultural communication refers to situated means of exchanging information between people or groups of different linguistics and culture. The process of intercultural communication requires people to pick duties of preserving their identity of culture and embracing other people’s culture. Perfect intercultural communication involves an understanding that ethnic groups have different norms and standards. The ongoing relationship between people established by the language of individuals with different social and political life form intercultural communication. Intercultural communication practices are subjected to independent subjects, especially in areas where it is theoretically grounded. It is taught in schools to improve skills and knowledge as well as promoting a positive attitude and awareness. People should be aware of their own beliefs and that of others as well as developing the ability to note clash between cultures. Intercultural communication practices occur in different categories; verbal communication, nonverbal communication, interethnic communication and communication amongst members of the same social class (Test my prep, 2018). Verbal communication is language dependent. People use language to express their thoughts, ideas, and emotion amongst themselves. Use of language promotes the mutual influence of people in exchange of ideas and feelings. People using the same language form an ethnic culture with experts of information within the group. Verbal communication serves as a mean of an understanding participant because it takes place in the form of dialogue or monologue. Verbal communication is different from nonverbal communication because it uses language and text to exchange information. The tone and pitch used in verbal communication contribute to the effective transmission of information. Verbal communication requires the participant to be clear to promote effectiveness in the transfer of information thus avoiding conflict. Intercultural communication practices are complicated by different understanding in the meaning of context. Research shows that that information transferred during verbal communication is less than 40%, whereas information transmitted through non-verbal communication method is more than 60%.
Nonverbal communication practices depend on nonlinguistic means to convey information within people. Symbols, signs, and body language are used to transmit information and messages during communication. Research indicates that nonverbal communication methods are the oldest form of skills in communication (Blatner, A). Nonverbal communication relies on the expression of the body movement, sounds and objects having specific symbolic meanings. Nonverbal communication has a more ambiguity in the transfer of messages than verbal communication method. Signs used in nonverbal communication have a different meaning to different ethnic cultures.
