Solitude is a significant key that defines most human beings. We all need solitude at one point in our lives. The difference is how we find solitude. Solitude describes our state of being alone and how we automatically figure out what is best for us, the dos and don’ts, and what best serves our situation. Humans, as social beings, face solitude, either voluntary or involuntary, and significantly contributes to our take on the world. For all the things people do in this world, one fundamental cause is the search for happiness.
Despite how unlucky Kathy and Wade are, they magically find solace and ways to find happiness. They were in living in a wooded area in a simple cottage, out of nowhere. The theme of love and relationship is developed in the story, where the couple found happiness despite all odds. The only things that would provide enjoyment to them, but in vain, were the yellow cottage connecting to the woods, more woods, and no contact with the outside world. Kathy and Wade alienate themselves from the world, without roads, cities, or people to interact with, but yet was an outstanding beauty within their vicinity. Kathy firmly held her love for Wade despite the challenges they were facing and his lack of trust in Kathy. Kathy takes a firm position in Wade's relationship and offers all her love and dedication despite the disappointments faced in her commitment to him. Kathy acts as a motivator and a shoulder for Wade to cry on.
The story introduces us to Kathy's theme of love and relationship, being selfless to ignore her suffering and major on and Wade’s frustrations to push for his happiness. In the dock, outside the lake, they lacked the interest or motivation to make love to each other. They shared a common goal, both having memories of their wishes in life that had not yet materialized but still firmly clung to their mind. Love made Kathy make tough decisions and support made, giving him assurances that all would be well in the elections, giving names of babies that were yet to come, ideas of decorating an imaginary house, and more loads of wishes. Despite their situation, Kathy introduced happiness, considering that happiness would come and would be their destiny. Kathy’s love and commitment to her relationship with Wade made them stay strong in the dark and lonely place, lost in reality but strong in hope. Kathy fully heartedly supported Wade and played her role in the relationship by providing hope and reassurance by helping him forget the loss they had in place and instead dreamed of happiness.
Despite finding themselves in difficult situations, Kathy wholeheartedly supported Wade and motivated him to keep up the fight. They held their symbols of happiness tightly and clanged strongly to it despite spending hours of wishful and hopeful thinking, with an absurd result of getting back to the same reality and unwanted, unexpected situation. Kathy, at times, played as a motivator by neutralizing the condition for him and acting as a voice of hope by canceling their fate and raising a tempo of hope by underrating the things they had encountered and motivating him that there was a possibility of 'making things better (7).
