I Love America. That's Why I Have to Tell the Truth About It Summary

Essay Instructions:

Reading and Thinking: Read the article "I Love America. That's Why I Have to Tell the Truth About It" ( click on the title).
This is one of the best professional essays I've read in recent years. In this narrative, the author focuses on the use of the old aphorism, "America, Love or Leave It." He goes into great detail about why he believes that this aphorism is one of the most un-American things a person can say. As you're reading, I want you think about how his experience as an American has led to this conclusion about the aphorism. It is not important whether you agree or disagree with his ideas. As I matter of fact, I'm not interested in reading about how you felt about the essay. What I want you to focus on are the following bullet points:
why does he feel this way?
how has his experience shaped his perspective?
are the reasons that support his main idea clearly expressed and reasonable?
and offer at least two examples from the essay that you find best expressed why he feels that "America, Love it or Leave it" is an un-American aphorism

Why does he feel this way?
He feels this way because many Americans do not like to hear different versions of the truth. For example, Nguyen notes that some veterans wrote to him about the Vietnamese invasion and shared their disgust and disdain over his remarks. One of them went ahead to ask him to leave with his son for Vietnam. Such people are responsible for rhetoric that continually seeks to tell the truth from one side. To Nguyen, such facts are subjective and will force him not to share his views regarding specific issues. He notes that “every country believes in its own best self and from these visions has built beautiful cultures.” However, equipped with the truth, Nguyen believes that every country deserves to be told the truth and be grateful enough to accept the same.
He feels this way because he is continually subjected to the notion that he does not belong. The above comes out clearly when a veteran asks him to leave America. In doing so, this veteran inadvertently tells him that he does not deserve the position he holds and thus should not take a stand against that which is considered American. Nguyen notes that he wanted to keep his Vietnamese name early in his life but take an American identity. He did not want to forget or leave his identity behind. He maintains that he wanted to be committed to America but an America that he “would force to say my name, rather than to an America that would force a name on me.” The above shows that he wanted to belong but maintain whichever identity he chose for himself.
How has his experience shaped his perspective?
His experience has dramatically shaped his perspective and approach to the stand he takes. For example, he writes about a love for France that he admits comes from the fact that the French colonized Vietnam. “Perhaps because of this history, part of me loves France, a love that is due, in some measure, to having been mentally colonized by France.” The above shows that part of his subjective fabric is moved or in...
