I find this article by Maria Godoy’s titled “In U.S. Restaurants, Bars and Food Trucks, 'Modern Slavery' Persist” profoundly insightful. It is indeed true that modern day slavery is still alive and kicking in various sectors of the economy, especially in the United States. It’s quite a sad realization to note that at this day and age, human beings can still take advantage of fellow human beings, for the sake of their own benefit. The aim of human traffickers is always to enjoy the money that comes with each successful trafficking, in the form of payment.
Human trafficking is the commerce of human beings for forced labor or sexual slavery. Human trafficking is considered a crime because it violates the rights of the victims. Most victims of human trafficking include children and women. It has been reported that in the United States the rate of human trafficking for forced labor and sexual slavery is very high. Most of the individuals who are forcibly moved into the United States include individuals from Vietnam, China, Mexico and Guatemala. The human traffickers then force them to work in some of the restaurants and bars found in the US.
They work as bartenders in the bars and cooks in the restaurants and those who work as bar tenders in the bars are forced to provide sex. The individuals live in poor conditions. The victims live in unpleasant conditions and most of them are denied medical care. Additionally, even though they are forced to do hard jobs most of them are rarely paid and even if they are paid the cash is hardly enough to sustain their basic needs.
