Everyone needs to undergo the development process to grow physically, cognitively, and socially. The development process has nine stages: prenatal, infancy and toddlerhood, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle adulthood, late adulthood, and death and dying (Malik & Marwaha, 2022). Each stage brings changes that support the individual in fulfilling and performing in life. Furthermore, each phase has a specific focus. This paper focuses on four stages: middle childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, and middle adulthood.
Middle Childhood
A child’s personality, the discovery of skills, and the selection of friends are all expected in middle childhood. During this stage, the child spends most of their time at school, where they gain experiences that aid their development. For example, children will be asked to complete various tasks in school, and through these tasks, they will learn more about themselves. They will identify their strengths and weaknesses. A child may also develop socially in school. A child will learn how to interact with classmates and other students. However, a child will also be subject to pressure brought about by the competition in school. Children are expected to perform well than other students (Malik & Marwaha, 2022). Furthermore, they are expected to be industrious during this time to contribute more to their society, which is the school (Issawi & Dauphin, 2020; Orenstein & Lewis, 2021). According to Erikson’s psychosocial development, a child must succeed in this stage to build self-confidence. To summarize, middle childhood is when children begin interacting with people other than their families. It marks the beginning of their belonging to a larger group that contributes to their growth and development (Issawi & Dauphin, 2020).
Adolescence
Adolescence is when a person’s body, brain, and behavior develop. Adolescents go through puberty, which causes significant changes in their bodies and behaviors. The maturation of their sex organs, which prepares them for reproduction, is a substantial change in their bodies. This stage is also where adolescents begin to form romantic relationships. Furthermore, this is a stage in which one can explore and learn much about oneself and the environment. The elderly must guide adolescents to grow and develop an identity appropriately because they are vulnerable during this stage (Orenstein & Lewis, 2021). It is also a transition into adulthood, so adolescents must adjust and prepare to be adults (Backes & Bonnie, 2019). In conclusion, adolescence is when a person is physically, cognitively, and emotionally ready for adulthood.
Early Adulthood
In early adulthood, a person’s goal is to have a promising career and start a family. This stage is also known as the physiological peak because a person is fully developed at this point. Young adults are in the excellent physical condition and can do anything they want. This stage also shows that the person is emotionally stable. And the person is already self-aware.
