Summary
In the first paragraph, the authors indicate that obesity is relatively high among young people, indicating the necessity of a new approach. According to the authors, the best approach to dealing with obesity is through prevention, since treatment it is not productive. Thus, it is important to formulate long-term sustainable strategies that are population-level based (Fletcher & Patrick, 2014).
In addition, the authors criticize our reliance on guidelines and treatments that are ineffective just because they are provided by those in the public health. Moreover, the authors criticize the government for their little involvement in the formulation of policies that will help curb the problem of obesity. Further, the authors point out to the flawed approach in which we blame individuals who are overweight and obese, yet there are other contributing factors beyond their control. In line with this, the authors propose a change in the current approach, recommending strategies that are both individual and community-focused. For instance, they recommend school-based nutrition intervention and the regulation of high-calorie food products through taxation (Fletcher & Patrick, 2014).
