Tutorial Preparation Task: This tutorial focuses on using evidence to support an argument based on this week’s readings on the linguistic encoding of politeness. In preparation for the tutorial you should have read one of Lee et al. (2017), Okamoto (2011) or Pan and Kádár (2011) and participated in the Week 6 Seminar. In addition, prepare notes in response to the tasks below.

1. What is the goal of your chosen article? That is, what is the research question that the article aims to investigate and why is this question important to understanding the language in question and language use in general.

2. Briefly describe the article’s argument in response to its research question. Write a short paragraph that sets out the overarching argument presented in the article, and comment on how it addresses the importance of the article’s goal to language use in general. Write no more than 100 words. You may choose to submit written preparation for this tutorial; do this using the tutorial submission link on the relevant weekly topic block on the course Wattle site. Submitted tutorial preparation is due by Wednesday 12pm (midday) in the relevant week. Your submitted preparation should consist of a written response to the task question(s). Remember to bring a copy (printed or electronic) of your tutorial preparation to your tutorial class.
