Heroism in Beowulf
Beowulf is a strong hero that uses what he has to support others. Heroes are humble, selfless, magnanimous, and philanthropic and these are what makes a very good humanitarian. Beowulf is epic and namesake of the tale is an example of all the characteristics found in a hero during the Anglo-saxon period. His honesty, loyalty, and courageousness are what makes him a very effective hero. All of these characteristics are demonstrated during his battle against Grendel and the conflict against Grendel’s mother. After that, he fought against a dragon that ended his life.
Beowulf is described as valiant and worthy because he is willing to put himself at risk to save people that deserve it. Beowulf is a great leader and uses his example to lead. One of the most valiant traits he had was that he did not fear dying. Before he went into battle, he will say what his death wishes are and he wants his possessions to be sent to his home if he dies. He has a lot of confidence, but leaves fate to determine if he is to die or live with an understanding that he can be beaten anytime. Beowulf is a typical Anglo-saxon hero because he lives every moment like it is his last.
