Cause: It is very important for the teacher to observe the behavior of Tommy and also take some evidence of outbursts. Tommy is three years old but even with this age, his behaviour is very immature for a three-year old. The reason why three-year-old Tommy is crying and upset is that he can’t draw a truck like that of Sam because maybe he thinks that Sam is more special than him. Also, Tommy and Sam might have been doing other exercises together, and Tommy has been emerging the winner. This time, Tommy has been defeated by Sam in drawing a truck, and that frustrates him. As a result, Tommy starts crying; this is clear evidence that Tommy is a highly sensitive child to things like defeat, criticism, and maybe bullying. Highly sensitive children have a sensitive nervous system, which makes them react to small things as he perceives everything with a lot of depth (Arora, 2018). Therefore, the cause of Tommy crying is because he is unable to a draw a truck like Sam, which can be taken as defeat because he is highly sensitive. Tommy is highly sensitive because he dislikes all negative things like being defeated and is uncomfortable with losing to Sam; hence he cries as a way of comforting himself.
Tommy is also very competitive such that when he dies not meet his set target or does not do his best, he gets very upset and angry. The behaviors of Tommy indicates that he is a very frustrated boy when he is challenged. This makes Tommy not to joy some activities with his peers. Therefore he is not learning anything. Tommy requires constructive assistance and guidance so that he can be able to learn to control his emotions.
Tommy, being a highly sensitive child, is difficult and exhausting to control his behavior, considering that he views everything with different perspectives, which makes him emotional in many cases. The pre-school teacher should view Tommy’s character as being highly sensitive to petty issues as a gift. Children’s highly sensitive character makes them innovative and creative for them to be competent with the other children.
One of the most important thing the teacher should do is making an assessment. According to this assessment, guidance and counselling should be incorporated. Additionally, the teacher should also invite the parents of Tommy to a conference so that they will be able to learn more about the behavior of Tommy. The teacher should also focus in praising Tommy instead of criticizing or judging Tommy. In this case, making Tommy stop crying can be difficult, but if the approaches Tommy with positivity, then it can be easy to make him calm down. The teacher can encourage Tommy by telling him that he can draw even better than Sam (Morin, 2020). Encouraging highly sensitive children makes them always feel special, and it will make them feel that their effort is appreciated. Encouraging Tommy will help him work hard to always do to the best to avoid being defeated by his friend, Sam.
