Alcoholism and Liver disease patients are on the rise, and therefore, this raises the question as to whether they should be listed among the patients awaiting liver transplants. Most of the transplant hospitals require the liver patients to show six months of sobriety before they could register to be on the waiting list. Hence, this makes it difficult to determine whether the alcohol patient will be able to exercise such sobriety (Roshnee, 2008). However, alcohol patients have equal healthcare rights as other patients, and therefore, they deserve to be listed on the liver transplant queue. After the transplant, the patients should be monitored closely to prevent them from relapsing since the transplant would have gone to waste. Various scholars argue out that the alcohol patients should not be prioritized for liver transplants, but since it is their health right, then they should be given a chance to get a new liver.
Among the ethical issues involved in organ transplants is rationing care. The number of people that require the vital organs exceeds the available organs, and therefore, such shortage forces the society to adapt to the rationing care (Duggirala, Rajendran & Anantharaman, 2008). As well, compensating the donors is a question of discussion since some of them might deem its feet to be rewarded for the act while others would not want such rewards. The determination of the balance between the benefit for society and the risk faced by the patient brings out a huge concern in the world of experimental medicine and research. Finding such a balance is a difficult task since the wellbeing of the patient as well as the satisfaction of society are both priority acts.
