           Emergent literacy denotes the initial period of preschoolers developing literacy skills by learning how print materials work and how to make sounds that compose words and syllables. Children cannot read or write at this stage, but they know the alphabetical letters; they understand the different types of written words and their purposes and can decipher units of sound that make up words, syllables, and phonemes (Turnbull & Justice, 2016, pp. 198). Oral language skills are vital in understanding language and how to use it to talk.
           Alphabet knowledge refers to a preschooler's understanding of the alphabet by recognizing letters that make up their names, becoming interested in specific letters, and writing letters familiar to them (Turnbull & Justice, 2016, pp. 198). Alphabet knowledge does not mean children can spell words, but they can identify certain letters based on their knowledge of alphabets and their significance. The own-name advantage refers to the preschooler's ability to make out alphabetical letters that compose their name. The letter-name pronunciation effect refers to how children learn alphabets beginning with letters whose pronunciation is in their name and then proceeding to those whose pronunciation is not in the name (Turnbull & Justice, 2016, pp. 199).
           Print awareness is children's specific achievement within a developmental duration (Turnbull & Justice, 2016, pp. 199). These achievements include print interest, where children find out that print exists and its words, letters, and depiction are attention-grabbing and stimulating.
