For this activity, you will write a short paper on a diversity topic of your choice. Review the module resources and visit the IDS 400 Library Guide for guidance on how to select a topic. Choose a topic in diversity that you are interested in. It could be a topic you have personally experienced or a topic that you are interested in knowing more about. Apply each lens to your topic by using its language and perspectives.

You are not required to answer each question below the rubric criteria but may use them to better understand the criteria and guide your thinking and writing.

Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:

  1. Describe your existing knowledge about your topic in diversity.
    1. You might describe your personal experience with the topic, what you learned in school, or what your assumptions are about the topic. Ask, what do I know (or think I know)?
  2. Apply the history lens to your topic.
    1. Using the language of history as it is defined in your resources, and as it is used in history-focused journals, how would you write about your topic? What events and dates have occurred that are important to your topic? Has the significance of the topic diminished or shifted with time? Who are the authors of the historical record(s) related to your topic?
  3. Apply the humanities lens to your topic.
    1. Using the language of the humanities as it is defined in your resources, and as it is used in humanities-focused journals, how would you write about your topic? What meaning does your topic have within cultures? How do people express themselves with regards to your topic? What are people’s lived experiences with your topic?
  4. Apply the natural and applied sciences lens to your topic.
    1. Using the language of the natural and applied sciences as it is defined in your resources, and as it is used in natural and applied sciences–focused journals, how would you write about your topic? How might the scientific method be used to examine some aspect of your topic? How might your topic relate to the physical or material world?   5. Apply the social science lens to your topic.

The Effects of Education on Women’s Participation in Politics and Governance
Women's participation in politics and governance is seen to be significantly influenced by education. For the younger generation, the significant differences between men’s and women's educational attainment that were visible in the early 1970s have all but vanished. For instance, in the early years of my education, in the late 1980s, the proportion of girls to boys was nearly equal. However, women held an extremely small percentage of leadership and political posts. I was certain that having a decent education was a requirement for women to work in politics and administration. In this essay, I used the four interdisciplinary general education lenses to analyze how education affects women's participation in politics and government. These lenses include those from the humanities, social sciences, natural and practical sciences, and history.
History Lens
History has shown how women's involvement in education has changed over time. They initially showed less interest in the study, subsequently had difficulty continuing their education, and finally, in the 19th and 20th centuries, they became the most educated people (Eisenmann, 2006). As a result of being able to pursue an education without suffering discrimination, women have advanced into political and other administrative responsibilities. History was achieved on the continent when Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf became the first woman to be elected president of Liberia in 2005 (Mari Tripp, 2013). Women are now represented in the legislative, executive, and local branches of government, among other institutions. There are more female lawmakers than ever, with Africa having the highest proportion globally.
Humanities Lens
