Caffeine has been around for many years and is having an impact on more people every day. It is the most freely consumed, easily available and socially acceptable of all psychotic drugs. It is not surprising that several concerns have been voiced over the excessive use of caffeine and its safety which led to numerous researches. The positive outcomes it produces such as enhanced flow of thought, increased mental alertness, and most importantly the feeling of wakefulness are the reasons why it has a high rate of consumption. But, everything in this world has two effects, positive and negative, like the two sides of a coin that cannot be separated. Hence, it is of interest to discuss whether caffeine consumption is beneficial for cognitive functions or not.
Caffeine is one of those substances which is contained in most beverages nowadays. Be it the cold drinks, supplement, tea or coffee, Nordqvist (2017) states that it has been known for a long time as helpful in boosting the alertness of an individual consuming it. This is because the blood sugar is brought down immediately while signaling the brain for decrease in demand of sugar, which then results to lift alertness in mind. Also, people reach out for caffeine to be able to think straight. Since it is a stimulant, it can combat tiredness, improve concentration and focus (Nordqvist, 2017). The researchers from The Harvard School of Public Health have collected data from the participants’ diet and found out that those who increased their level of caffeine intake had lower type 2 diabetes risk. On the other hand, Italian researchers confirmed that caffeine lowers the risk of liver cancer by 40%. Moreover, a study was carried out by James (2014) as cited by Nordqvist (2017) regarding the correlation between chronic consumption of caffeine and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease ...
