China is a country that is affected mostly by natural disasters. For example in 1931, there were floods that killed more than 3 million people. Natural disasters occur recurrently in China and more than 200 million people have been affected annually. Some of these disasters include droughts, hurricanes, and floods, seismic among others. The purpose of this paper is to analyze a natural disaster Sichuan is likely to experience and some of the mitigation strategies the country can apply in response to the disaster.
One of the natural disasters likely to affect Sichuan, China is floods. Currently, about three million people have been affected by floods in this region. The number of people evacuated is not than 36, 000 so far (Courtney, 2015). However, strict measures have been put in place to curb the spread of the risk.
One of the main causes of floods in Sichuan is deforestation. Cutting down trees causes' soil erosion. This makes the area prone to mudslide when there is strong rain, therefore, resulting in soil erosion. Water tends to run off quickly and cause floods where there are no trees or bushes to absorb the water. Sichuan is hit by heavy rainfalls every year during summer. Sichuan home is at risk of being affected by floods since it is located at the top of a hill. Alternatively, large amounts of lose sediments become deposited at river channels like River Qing Jing. This has made such rivers to lose the ability to deal with heavy storms and smaller floods. Additionally, geological disasters like mudslides and landslides are the biggest contributors to floods in Sichuan.
