While both the novel The Glass Menagerie and the film August: Osage County were award winning in their own respective genres, what makes them exquisite pieces is that they embody a modernist approach on reality (IMDB.com, n.d.). Specifically, both of these works provide a kind “disillusionment” of the everyday life that we live in and awakens its viewers to the possibility that things that happen in our lives could be viewed differently. A good example of this kind of disillusionment that were portrayed in the said pieces is the modern family structure characterized by dysfunctionality. In both of these works, the outside world becomes aware that some of the issues that we take for granted within our families (e.g. cheating, divorce, etc.) characterizes a problem that is being experienced by millions of Americans today. In this article, I would provide a further discussion of how these pieces increased the awareness of its viewers by providing this kind of disillusionment. Nonetheless, I believe that this kind of disillusionment was shown in the works via the expression of relationships between different characters.
The Commonness of Dysfunctionality
In the novel The Glass Menagerie, this theme was expounded as Williams protray a family that was desperately trying to deal with the hardships of their lives, after they were deserted by their own husband and father. While it primarily focuses on the narration of the main protagonist Tom Wingfield, the difficulty of the situation that he is left with has left a deep imprint on the relationship between him, his mother Amanda, and his sister Laura.
