10 12:22 Spring Scene
[Tang Dyn.] Du Fu
The country is broken, but mountains and rivers remain,
The city enters spring, grass and trees have grown thick.
Feeling the time, flowers shed tears,
Hating separation, a bird startles the heart.
Beacon fires span over three months,
A family letter equals ten thousand taels of gold.
My white hairs, as I scratch them, grow more sparse,
Simply becoming unable to hold hairpins.
social commentary
To the Tune “Sheep on Mountain Slope”: Meditation on the Past at Tong PASS
[Yuan Dyn.] Zhang Yanghao
Peaks and ridges press together,
Waves and torrents rage,
Zigzagging between the mountains and the river runs the road through Tong PASS.
I look to the Western Capital,
My thoughts linger.
It breaks my heart to come to the old place of the Qin and the Han.
Now palaces and terraces have all turned to dust.
Dynasties rise,
The common folk suffer;
Dynasties fall,
The common folk suffer.
personal feeling
Returning to Live on the Farm, No. 1
[Jin Dyn.] Tao Qian
Since youth out of tune with the vulgar world,
My nature instinctively loves hills and mountains.
By mishap I fell into the dusty net,
Once gone, thirteen years went by.
The caged bird longs for its grove of old,
The pond's fish thinks of its former depths.
Clearing land at the edge of the southern wilds,
Guarding simplicity, I returned to my farm.
The homestead amounts to ten-odd mou,
With a thatched hut of eight or nine bays.
Elms and willows shade the rear eaves,
Peach and plum line up in front of the hall.
In a haze lie the distant villages,
Indistinct is the smoke above the houses.
A dog barks somewhere in the deep alley,
A cock crows from atop the mulberry tree.
My home is unsoiled by worldly dust,
Within empty rooms I have peace to spare.
For long I have lived within a cage,
And now I may return to nature.

Spring Scene
The “Spring Scene” is a poem written in the time of brilliant artistry followed by war times, turmoil and disaster when the Tang emperor Xuanzong fell in love with the wife of his son Yang Guifei. The emperor neglected his responsibilities and later goes into exile due to the demands of the rebels. At the end of the warfare, the emperor returns home and mounts to the throne with Tang Dynasty losing its prosperity.
Question 1:
The author Chun wang combines both social comments and personal feelings in “Spring Scene." The poem reveals a political affiliation with warfare in the land of China. The author reveals the poem in its original language with a personal reflection on the fall of Tang Dynasty. The persona is an observer who pities the emperor, and the dynasty with a universal voice with no conceal of information to the reader with no suspense to the reader. The repletion and rhyme such as "Feeling the time, flowers shed tears" gives the depressed mood to the reader. The personal feeling gives the extent of separation of the emperor to the dynasty when he mentions, "Hating separation; a bird startles the heart."
Both the social comments and personal feeling from the poem is in the form of the language that the author uses in verse. The style reflects the social and cultural world in the perspective of Chinese during the Tang dynasty. The author shows sympathy to the ending regime with a lousy emperor who does not care for the citizens hence the empire is taken over by the rebels who destroy it and leaves it devoid. The persona only sees a broken country with nothing. The only existing elements are the mountains and rivers of the city that enters spring with thick grass and trees growing on it to reveal the emptiness in his heart. The sorrows in the eyes of the person makes the reader have empathy especially when he says;
Now palaces and terraces have all turned to dust.Dynasties rise,The common folk suffer;Dynasties fall,The common folk suffer.
The poem is sound driven with the social commentary. For example, the line Feeling the time, flowers shed tears. The line seems to be the point of review with the speaker revealing the hopelessness to rebuild the dynasty. Furthermore, the speaker as an observer gives the experience with the societal problem as the persona feels offended by the disunity and scattered hope of the Tang people hence revealing the emotional compelling with a metaphorical thought provoking attitude.
Another poem that gives the aspects of social commentary is the "Returning to Live on the Farm" by Tao Qian. The persona shows his determination to live on the farm with a steady rhythm. Besides, the breaking of the lines do not even that emphasizes the thoughts. For example,
My nature instinctively loves hills and mountains.By mishap, I fell into the dusty net,Once gone, thirteen years went by.The caged bird longs for its grove of old,The pond’s fish thinks o...
