Communication refers to the exchange of opinions, ideas, facts, or emotions by two or more people (Sehgal & Khetarpal, 2006). It serves to tell, inform, or spread of information and thus play an important role in strengthening the unity of interests among members of a workforce.
Communication Styles
As informed by Rasmussen, Mylonas, & Beck (2012), there exist four main communication styles that are aggressive, assertive, manipulative and passive. Aggressive style of communication is where an individual does not value the information and opinion of other people. Such communicators believe that it is their role to straighten other people. Therefore, they often exercise power over others through the use of intimidation strategies. In the second communication style, assertive, one has his own opinions but respect those of other people. Such communicators are ready to learn from other people, and when they state information, they do it precisely and honestly while giving the listener an opportunity to respond (Rasmussen, Mylonas, & Beck, 2012). In manipulative style, the communicator uses communication as a method to have his or her way. The communication is often accompanied by insincere compliments that are aimed at tricking the listener to allow them to have their away. Finally, passive style happens when the communicator does not value his or her own judgment or opinion enough to express them. Such communicators are often insecure and confused and follow the opinion of others in order to avoid conflicts.
