Prohibition is a term given to the famous period in United States history that lasted for fourteen years from 1919 to 1933 after enactment of 18th Amendment that barred manufacturing, distribution, and sale of alcohol (Blocker, 2006). During this era, the sale and manufacture of liquor were banned except for medicinal and religious use. During this period, the crime rate was very high. More individuals participated in criminal activities, and notorious groups such as European syndicates and American mobsters flourished (Blocker, 2006). Also, renowned criminals such as Clyde, John Dillinger Bonnie, and Al Capone all become popular during this era. At the time, jobs were scarce and considering that people wanted to feed their families, most of them turned to dangerous activities as a simple way to earn a living.
When the American Congress enacted the 18th amendment to outlaw sale and manufacturing of alcohol, the individuals who enjoyed drinking became even dangerous criminals and started promoting its sale (Blocker, 2006). The 18th amendment led to increased demand for alcohol in the country which was not readily available following the implementation of this act. Consequently, the number of illegal liquor manufacturers, sellers and distributors increased substantially (Blocker, 2006). These acts were committed through organized crime, whereby the perpetrators bribed the top government officials. Organized crimes also engaged in the manufacture of counterfeited medicinal whiskey that was stored and sold in drug stores.
In 1933, the US Congress enacted the 21st Amendment that repealed the 18th Amendment, following the increased illegal activities in the manufacturing and sale of alcohol (Blocker, 2006).
