Globally, weed is one of the most abused drugs. There is a growing gap between the latest science and existing myths surrounding the use of the drug. Weed is controversially known to be beneficial for some physically ill people, and at the same time, it can be ruinous for individuals who regularly abuse the drug. Consumption of weed has various health benefits, but uncontrolled use leads to a lot of complications
A recent study shows that the behavioral effects of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are receptor-mediated (ElSohly, 2007). The substance can potentially be used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including anorexia, nausea, muscle spasticity and sleep disturbances. Tests have indicated that THC has mild-to- pain-killing effects that can be used in the treatment of pain. The Delta-9-THC is the main ingredient in the medical tablet that is used to treat nausea in cancer chemotherapy patients. Other medicinal uses of weed include glaucoma treatment, epileptic treatment, reduces progression of the Alzheimer’s, and reduced anxiety, among others (Waugh, 2016).
Consumption of weed helps in stimulating appetite in patients with AIDS. Additionally, weed has become one of the top prescriptions for HIV patients, especially because of their medicinal uses. Individuals use weed to achieve giddiness, relaxation and a feeling of happiness. Weed has been known to enhance an individual’s creativity, with increased verbal fluency (Waugh, 2016). However, despite the outlined benefits of weed, several negative effects emerge from the uncontrolled use of the drug. These include short term memory, which eventually leads to declined IQ levels, increased risks of stroke, hallucinations, sexual dysfunctions in males, and increased risks of heart attack, among others. Weed usage has both positive and negative effects. However, the benefits of controlled usage outweigh the negatives, which has led to the legalization of the drug in countries such as Alaska and Canada.
