The Journey to the West is one of the greatest Chinese novels that was written in the 16th century. One of the most important aspect about the novel is the approach that has been utilized by the author to describe the Chine tradition. Due to the popularity of the novel, it has been popularly produced in different films, TV programs and in other fiction books. It is also the most popular out of the four classical Chinese novels due to the vivid characters who have been used in the novel to portray the different characters. The novel is also wrong with different narratives that have been put together by the anonymous author. In this essay, we are going to provide an analysis of the novel. We will describe the characters, the structure and some of the themes covered by the author.
In the first part of the novel, we get to know one of the characters Sun Wukong who is actually a monkey hatched out of a rock. He then gets to know the Taoist philosophy and the central philosophy in the Chinese religion. He grows up enlightened and strong after receiving the five main Chinese elemenst which is water, fire, metal, earth and wood. However, at a certain point, Wukong annoys the gods and he is denied some of the privileges and only given a small position in heaven. After learning more about Taoist philosophy, he looks out for ways of becoming immortal. However, Buddha is not happy with his character and traps him under the rock for about 500 years.
