Problem Statement
Older people are at high risk of falls and fall-related injuries. The aftermath of such falls has adverse effects on the health of the patient where a majority of them end up being hospitalized or admitted permanently to nursing homes, and their quality of life is decreased (Lee, Lee, & Khang, 2013). Further, the effects are also experienced in the healthcare system because fall-related injuries put enormous pressure on the system regarding costs. As indicated by Lee, Lee, and Khang (2013), the cost associated with falls among the elderly is expected to reach $54.9 billion by the year 2020 in the USA. Based on these facts, it is important to affect practice change by providing EBP interventions to reduce the risk and recurrence of falls among the elderly.
EPB Question
Do multiple interventions as compared to a single intervention minimize the risk and prevent recurrent falls in the elderly?
Research Synthesis
A systematic review of various studies on EPB interventions to minimize the risk and recurrent of fall among the elderly will be conducted. This will be effective in synthesizing the studies because as noted by Gopalakrishnan and Ganeshkumar (2013), systematic reviews allow researchers to remove the limitation of small sample sizes in individual studies by minimizing errors and biases. Further, systematic reviews enhance the ability of researchers to acquire a better view of the evidence presented in the different studies.
Literature Review
Any relevant literature that details EPB interventions to reduce fall risks will be eligible for inclusion in the study. As noted by Porcino, et al. (2017), eligibility and types of documents are an important consideration in determining the studies to be included in the review.
