After reading "Daisy Miller", write a character analysis on one of the characters in the story. The analysis should not be a summary about the character; it should be a critical view of the character using evidence from the story to support your view. Below are some tips for writing a character analysis: • Describe the character. What is he/she like? • Take a closer look at what the character says during the story and the meaning. • Analyze his/her actions throughout the story. What are his/her motives? • What do other characters say about him/her? • What does the author/narrator say about him/her? Daisy is one of the main characters in Henry James's novel known as Daisy Miller. The author uses other characters to create a story which, in turn, brings out the character of Daisy. Among them is the main character known as Winterbourne. The author makes good use of the third person narration to bring out his ideas. Even though Winterbourne dominates the largest part of the author's view, Daisy remains to be a remarkable and important character in the story. Most of the themes revolve around her and, therefore, without her character, the author would not have been able to come up with his storyline. The author does a great job in keeping the character of Daisy ambiguous by focusing on other characters.
At the beginning of the story, Daisy is portrayed as a pretty and flirty woman. This is revealed by the fact that she has caught the attention of Winterbourne just like any pretty woman would do in real life. Regardless of not knowing Winterbourne, Daisy agrees to his offer of hanging out together. As a result, the author makes use of this character to bring out the theme of love. It is this theme that helps in propelling the story to the end until Daisy dies out of love. Winterbourne is unsure of Daisy's innocence and is almost grateful for the fact that he has found a beautiful woman. In his mind, the presentation of Daisy's beauty makes him believe that she is the one made for him. Daisy enjoys teasing other people and watching the reactions that they get from such teasing.
An example is a case whereby she asks Winterbourne whether he would be willing to take her out to the lake on a boat. In the real sense, she does not mean it and says that all she wanted was a little "fuss” (James, 2014). Also, when bidding Winterbourne goodnight, she tells him that she hopes to have disgusted and disappointed him. Of course, no one would say such a thing to someone he or she cares about, so she did not mean it. Concisely, this brings out the ambiguity of Daisy's character. This is part of Daisy trying to be humorous and in a flirtatious way. Such character helps in capturing the attention of the reader by making them have the interest to know more about the end of Daisy and Winterbourne.
As well, Daisy is witty, but might be uneducated. The author created a character that acts childishly, but at the same time, he argues out that such behavior is a "startling worldly knowledge" (James, 2014). An example is when Winterbourne criticizes the relationship between Daisy and Giovanelli during Mrs. Walker's party. Winterbourne claims that such kind of a thing is not understood there, especially in young married women. Daisy cuts him by saying that she thought that it was all that people understood there. She reveals he...
