The setting in Hisaye Yamamoto's short story "Wilshire Bus" in Los Angeles on the West Coast of America. Esther Kuroiwa is heading to the hospital in Los Angeles when she witnesses the unwarranted harassment of a Chinese-American couple (Yamamoto, 1950). I would not change the setting because it is critical to illustrating racial violence in America. Besides, it shows how divisions between different minority groups fuel indifference and impede unity amongst oppressed populations.
The setting in Octavia Butler's short story "Speech Sounds" is the aftermath of a worldwide pandemic that negatively impacted survivors' capacity I would not change the setting because it is critical to illustrating how miscommunication breeds violence (Butler, 1983). The short story was published during the cod war when many writers feared that a minor miscommunication between the feuding superpowers would result in catastrophic violence.
