Character Analysis of Antigone, Ismene, and Haemon

Essay Instructions:

Please following the instructions posted below and form a short character analysis, avoid plagiarism.

Antigone Character Analysis

Although the basic plot of Sophocles’ Antigone remains unchanged, Anouilh takes liberties with his characters’ descriptions, words, attitudes, and motivations.

Today’s assignment asks you to analyze the main characters, Antigone, Ismene, and Haemon**, in an attempt to understand the significance of these changes.

For each character, I’d like you to answer the following questions—with concrete quotes and/or paraphrases from the text if possible

As always, feel free to be creative with your responses. As long as you can back up your analysis with textual evidence, your interpretation is valid!

  • How is the character described?
  • How do they act?

  • What do their interactions with the other characters reveal about them?
  • Any additional observations, insights, or ideas?

**Although you won’t need to analyze Creon for this assignment—as he appears later in the play—I strongly suggest asking similar questions of his character as well!!

Antigone: Character Analysis
Antigone
In the beginning, Antigone is described as a thin little creature staring at nothing which appears to be alone and lonely. The kind of a person whose “family would never take serious”  (Sophocles, c. 441 BCE, p. 3) perhaps because she does not give life the seriousness it deserves as the family expects. This is highlighted in the story when the nurse busts her walking back into the house, and Antigone is seemingly not truthful about where she had been. This makes the nurse mad because she is a king’s daughter and should not be sneaking around with boys. Her interaction with the nurse reveals that she is secretive. However, she also gives the impression that she has her mind on a clear and decisive goal.
