Laura lee Kimble, a 49-year-old lady who works as a maid at Mrs. Celestine Clairborne's residence, is mentioned in the story "the conscience of the court." She has been caring for her employer since she was born, and despite being only five years her senior, she loves her like a mother (Hurston, 1950). The author depicts how Laura's love has gone to extremes in motivating her decisions such as who to love, where to stay, and what chances to pass up, and now it's just the two of them. Laura grew up in a modest servant's house on Mrs. Clairborne's property, where her parents worked as servants (Hurston, 1950).
She became their maid, a job she didn't want to leave for the rest of her life. She has known Mrs. Clairborne since she was a youngster, through her marriage, and now as widows with no children. The main character is illiterate, talkative, bold, tough, loyal, loving, and tenacious. She is humble, confident in herself, and tolerant of whichever life throws at her. She is unafraid of Beasley, the judge, or the jury, and she boldly expresses herself. She has no ego, so she doesn't grasp the judge's praise after the trial and just goes home to look after her boss (Hurston, 1950).
