Comparison of Stories from Different Cultures
Ancient societies around the world were divided along with different traditions, cultures, diversity, and religions. The story of Strega Nona introduces a society in Italy that embraces religion but still depends on supernatural powers to solve their problems. Tikki Tikki Tembo story paints a picture of a community in China that honored their firstborns by giving them very long names, while other siblings were barely given any names. Third story of Foolish Frog talks about the culture of the rural American community. It indicates their lifestyle, songs they liked, and the roles of men and women in society. On the other hand, A story A story talks about the tales of society from northern Africa, it emphasizes the importance of telling stories in African society. The paper discusses ancient fairytale reflecting on the cultural beliefs of various communities in rural America, Italy, China, and Africa and the lessons that anthropology can learn from them.
From the Chinese culture, we learn the virtue of helping one another and the importance of obedience. The community was gender-biased, as men participated in hard labor, women carried out lighter duties. Older people played critical roles in the well being of children. Children, on the other hand, had the freedom and were not tasked to do much. In the community, the use of storytelling was mainly for entertaining children. The story enlightens adults to be keen on children and always take their concerns in a serious manner. The pictures demonstrate that the people lived in permanent houses and that the ancient Chinese people used to wear decent clothes. If I spend one year in the society, I will be able to gain a deeper understanding of their cultures and way of life through participation in communal work and by daily observations. I would ask the storytellers about religious practices and how they were able to sustain themselves (Tikki Tikki Tembo, 2016).
In the A story A Story, we learn that a weak old man can accomplish challenges through wisdom and creativity. In African societies, we learn the significance of stories and how they were valuable to the community. From the pictures, we see the role of men, women, and children in society. Women prepare food and take care of the children. The pictures indicate how Africans used to live together as a community in grass thatched houses. Spending one year in Africa will make me understand the position of women and men in society. I would ask the storytellers more about the gender roles in the community and how the society valued their gods. Adults used stories in Africa as a way of educating young people. It was an easy method for the adults because during storytelling sessions they also narrated their real-life experiences. This enhanced creativity in children and made them courageous (Anansi and the Sky God (“A Story A Story” Animated Storybook, 2018).
