Summary of assignment  • Task:  For this assignment, you are asked to collect real-life examples of barriers to communication that occur in your work or community environment. You will describe them, define them, justify them in a table, and then use them to rate your organization’s communication effectiveness.  • Length:  The assignment has four parts.  Details on word count are provided below and in the following pages.   o Part I of this assignment will be 200-250 words o Part II is a list of definitions.  The definitions in this section should be about 30-40 words each. o Part III is a table with short examples, names, and justifications.  Word count   will vary. o Part IV will be 175-250 words.    • Format:  you will not cite sources in this paper, so you will not use any particular citation style.  In writing up the assignment, please follow the template given on page 2.

In our workplace, communication problems pose a significant risk to our organizational performance. Workers may often fail to understand what has been communicated, leading to failure to act appropriately. In addition, employees who misinterpret communication failed to implement specific responsibilities and duties accorded to them via various communication channels. There are various specific examples of communication failures that our workplace employees face. First, some employees fail to understand some email texts, primarily when such texts are written using some problematic words, jargon, or ambiguous words. Second, some employees are not keen listeners to some colleague workers, especially when they have a history of conflict or dislike for each other. Thus, they do not respond nor act appropriately because they do not focus on the message but instead let the hate or negative attitude or perception blur the communication.
Third, gossiping and grapevine information have interfered adversely with our organizational communication. Peer and friends always shared information about other workers' affairs or unverified organizational information. The unverified information often reaches various employees who can act or behave differently towards each other and the organization. Grapevine and gossiping culminate in the passing of unverified or wrong information regarding many aspects. Thus, they are barriers to effective communication. Barriers to effective communication, such as the listed examples in the workplace, can reduce productivity, cause low staff morale, and poor customer service.
Part II is a list of definitions
Attitudinal Barriers: They are communication barriers that are based on
pervasive negative perceptions and value systems. These barriers often focused on a person’s ‘disability’ rather than the ability and are accompanied by an element of biasness or prejudice.
Language Barrier: primarily encompass linguistic barriers to communication emerging from communication by people who were initially speaking different languages or even dialects. Language barriers are experienced by people who fail to speak a common language that each party understands.
Environmental barriers: these are barriers associated with environmental and physical barriers of time, place, space, climate, and noise. They are often considered obstacles to effective communication.
Semantic barrier. It involves using high-sounding words that appear impressive but tends to impede the delivery of the intended message; for instance use of jargon poses semantic barriers to listeners.
Psychological barriers: these are associated with various psychological states that negatively influence how the message is sent, received, interpreted, or perceived. Psychological states...
