Recovery: How Is It Essential in Substance Abuse Cases
In addiction cases, recovery is not a one-time event. Instead, it is a life-long process that involves the family and the community wherein the addicted individual lives. When an individual admits himself to an addiction rehab facility, he is committing himself to undergo assessment and detoxification before he is admitted into the actual addiction rehab program.
During the assessment, this is where the longevity and the kinds of rehab programs applicable in the patient’s case are identified. It is during detox that the patient’s body is being rid of all the toxins that have been accumulated over time because of substance abuse.
Once the detox process is done, the rehab program commences. The patient can stay in an in-patient or outpatient rehab center. In the former case, he will have to live inside the treatment facility for a certain period of time under a strict schedule and with a dedicated healthcare worker to constantly check up on him. In the latter case, the patient won’t have to live in the treatment facility, but he needs to visit his doctor on certain days for his treatment.
Once the patient finishes his treatment program, the journey to sobriety and lifetime recovery starts. Aside from staying away from the substances that caused his addiction, part of the patient’s recovery is to be able to reintegrate seamlessly with society. This means he can go back being with his friends, start working again, and live with his family, too.
The reason why these relationships are important is that these people are the patient’s support system. It’s important that these people accept the individual on recovery, treat him the way they treated him before he was brought to rehab, and guide him not to come back to his old patterns. Should these people be hostile towards the addicted person, there is a high chance that the said person falls into relapse.
Another important factor to ensure the successful recovery of an addicted individual is for him to stay away from the people, events, crowd, and things that caused his addiction. If he falls into the same destructive pattern, in no time, he can find himself addicted again.
