Rhetorical Paper – An Analysis of Declaration of Conscience
Understanding rhetoric in articles is essential for any individual. It allows him to better grasp the writer's intentions and be more critical of them. In other words, it builds the foundation of a society that is not merely commanded by the publications and other pieces that they consume in their daily lives. Accordingly, this article would like to focus on the article entitled National Suicide": Margaret Chase Smith and Six Republican Senators Speak Out Against Joseph McCarthy's Attack on "Individual Freedom. This article was a statement by the former US, Margaret Chase Smith, in response to Senator McCarthy's and President Truman's stances and the lingering fear of communism during those days. Nonetheless, the author believes that what made this article effective was the use of the various rhetorical tools that complemented its underlying message.
Rhetorical Analysis
One of the main reasons for the effectiveness of this speech is its use of an appeal to authority (ethos). Ethos is the explicit or implicit declaration of one's authority and credibility in forwarding one's opinion about a thing. In this case, it could be seen that Senator Smith said, in the initial parts of her statement, that "I speak as a Republican. I speak as a woman. I speak as the United States Senator. I speak as an American." These words were necessary to establish that aside from being a Senator and a Republican, she is also speaking on behalf of women and Republicans. In turn, this helped establish on the minds of others that she is not merely acting based on her party affiliation and her responsibility as a Senator but also on her personal experiences as a member of the general public.
