Introduction
Chinese literature refers to any form of work that is created in the Chinese language ranging from poetry, drama scripts, academic work, and fictional novels, among many others. The literature has stood out as one of the vital world heritage thanks to its uninterrupted existence that has lasted over 3000 years. Additionally, the literature also stands out against most popular characters from various dialects of the world thank to its unique calligraphy nature that most philosophers have applauded. This is because of the Chinese calligraphy when used in a poem or any other written document; they play more roles than just the representation of the words. Artists have argued that they provide the reader with a beautiful image of what is written by creating a visual appeal to the reader. Among the Chinese pieces of literature that were created in Chinese is the fictional novel titled One Man's Novel, written by Gao Xingjian. Though written in Chinese in 1999, the novel was later translated in English by a Chinese professor Mabel Lee.
The theme of the book
The novel is not fictional as the author who doubles up as the narrator incorporates his fictional experiences growing up in china with the historical events that to place in China with a greater focus on the leadership strategy during Mao’s regime. From these observations, the book revolves around two major themes. One of the issues is the theme of freedom. This comes out on various occasions in the novel, where the narrator seems to be struggling to express his own opinions for fear of being punished by the regime. Perfect examples highlighting the narrator's struggle with attaining freedom is when he is denied a chance to leave the country because he is a writer (Xingjian, 2009). By being a writer, Mao's regime fears that the narrator will go against their will by subscribing to capitalism. The other example is when the narrator is forced to end his marriage with Lin as out of having insecure feelings that she might report him to the authorities to have different opinions from the regime in China.
