Shakespearean plays such as “Macbeth” just like “Chicken Dinner” are full of wealth that makes most characters boastful, vanity and arrogant. The theme of wealth and materialism in such plays make the plays end with a happy or sad mood among the audience. Both “Macbeth” and “Chicken Dinner” give a materialism to the audience. The authors peculiarly reveal the theme of wealth and materialism to show the negative aspects of the protagonists that result in opposite ending to the usual happy ending that audiences anticipate. The plays give two characters Macbeth and Jack who are comparable on many occasions. The theme of wealth and materialism and their possession by the characters give a contrasting behavior to the expectation of the audience.
Lady Macbeth is a protagonist character in "Macbeth." She is a wife of Macbeth, the king. Lady Macbeth is a character with the inhuman traits. She is an ambitious person who lusts for power and more wealth, and she strives to be a queen to gain much of materialism. As a result, Lady Macbeth taunts her husband to follow dubious ways to earn kingship and possession. On the other hand, Jack is a protagonist in "Chicken Dinner." Jack follows the wicked thoughts of getting rich, and upon acquiring wealth, he proves to be mean event though boastful of his achievements.
Jack is an arrogant lad who loves bragging around and full of conceit. He is ambitious towards any action that would bring glory and materialism to him. When Jack arrives at the party, he does not give his colleagues time to share their experiences in life. Instead, he is busy boasting on his achievements. He tells everyone how he is rich and full of material wealth. His voice command is arrogant and full of vanity. On the same note, Lady Macbeth is arrogant and disrespectful to the husband. She is arrogant and blames her husband for being weak and full of compassion. Lady Macbeth, She says, “I fear thy nature is too full o’ the milk of human kindness” (La Belle, 1980).
