Getting to understand the client perception provided a good starting point as this would eventually be relevant in assessment later on. After identifying the problems for the individuals and group as whole, then empowering them was easier. In the case of individuals, it became apparent that empathy was crucial to the success of intervention, as each problem is unique, and emphasizing with the clients’ situation helped ease tension and build trust. For the group, cultural competence was one of the most important aspects, given the differences in culture.
The critical thinking skills were relevant in working with the clients give the need to be culturally competent. Building trust among the clients was a good basis to understand their perceptions and uncertainties during the first sessions showed that trust building would prove vital over time. This experience was better than I had anticipated, as I initially had misgivings on whether it would be begin well. The clients had their different viewpoints depending on their experiences as well as cultural background. However, I was able to understand the importance of active listening, since this made it easier to teach them. In any case, providing feedback was effective to the extent that I understood the clients
My enthusiasm for engaging in field work is that it provided an opportunity for emerging professional identity. Working with the diverse Asian clients was crucial to achieve this, given that interpersonal skills help to understand cultural diversity better. Social inclusion and field instructions were agenda items that helped to create professional identity. As such to enhance assessment the clients were advised on the program’s objective to be covered.
After interacting with client, I noted their concerns with regards to the program and interventions. This made it easier to work with them again since undertaking interventions required empathy when faced with dealing with the client’s problem. Application of ideas is useful to transferring knowledge in the field practice. Both psychology and sociology courses would prove vital in the field experience, since understanding people’s behavior and their actions allowed me to observe the clients more keenly. Overall, critical cultural competence emphasizing on self awareness in the field experience ensured cultural sensitivity.
The systems perspective is to encourage every participant to focus on active learning and engage more with their colleagues as this would build bonds. As such, both empowerment and the strengths perspective are relevant to support intervention for the clients.
