The sports media landscape is changing rapidly. Sports broadcasting around the world are slowly drifting away from television screens, and it is getting closer to online streaming. Few people watch television nowadays; thus, numerous sports broadcasting organizations are experiencing a significant drop in viewership. There are many online streaming services and social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, to name a few that most millennial and young individuals visit to stay up to date with the latest information in the world of sports (Carrington & Zirin, 2016). With its gradual increase in the number of empathizers and marketers, the phenomenon will eventually affect the general viewership of sports around the globe. This is because since the screen is no longer the only aspect of the sports-media revolution, other related technologies such as virtual reality, immersive video, and 360 videos are changing the expectations of the audience on the presentation of the content.
Numerous sports media platforms have experienced the adverse effects of the change. In this section, the study wishes to highlight certain happenings in the last few years to create a solid understanding of the issue. The enormous development in the media industry is the relevant move that it has made towards the consumer model with enhanced viewer control. In the past, the viewers were being forced to follow on the sports in the news and other television programs about sports (Messner et al., 2016). The platforms listed below are significant media models in the sports ecosystem that share the concept of excellent viewer control.
1 ESPN: The newly updated ESPN application offers the audience a mix of sports from all the networks of ESPN directly to them, required that they have paid the subscription fee of approximately $5 per month (Kim, 2018). The service was launched in late April of 2019 to provide significant revenues to the various sports organizations at all levels with the appropriate agreements for the coverage of the numerous kinds of sports. ESPN delivers extensive and reliable media coverage for soccer, lacrosse, Grand Slam Tennis, boxing, eSports, and the divisions of soccer such as Division 1, English Premier League, and other classes.
2 Facebook Live: This platform is in line with the ability of an individual to invite his or her friends for a watch party. Facebook has grown to become a content organization, to the extent that sports are one of its media. Facebook Live and Facebook Watch are not so much different from the typical Facebook. This is because the two also offer user-generated content through the media and the acquired rights of firms such as MLB (Reed, 2017). The platform is massive and relevant to any user who would like to serve his or her loyal football followers. Scholars have termed these reforms as a market amateur sports in a digital manner with the view of supplementing traditional cable viewing.
