Introduction
Commonly referred to as the rowdy spirit of Philadelphia due to his fearless ball-to-wall style of play, Allen Iverson gave NBA 14 years of potent scoring and unmatched playmaking. Consequently, his tremendous achievements on the court, place him in a class that contains only three other legends; Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, and George Gervin. However, Iverson’s social life and court displays were not always perfect as people may think. He had to confront difficulties such as jail sentences, injuries, and financial problems.
Biography
Allen Ezail Iverson was born to Ann Iverson, a single mother, in June 1975. He adopted his mother’s maiden name because his biological father separated from them before he was born. During his early childhood years, he spent most of his time in the projects of Hampton where he was nicknamed "Bubba Chuck," for his willingness to assist other kids. He went to Bethel High School where he engaged in Football as a quarterback and shooting guard on the basketball team. He abandoned football and continued with basketball at Georgetown College. It was during his college days when he became the first player to join the NBA under Coach Thompson. While 13 years, his stepfather Michael Freeman, was arrested in his presence, for engaging in drugs. This incident affected Iverson greatly that he failed his eighth-grade test. However, Iverson met the same fate when he was 17. He was convicted on the charge of striking a woman with a chair (Allen Iverson Biography). Fortunately, after 4 months in a correctional facility in Newport, Governor Douglas Wilder granted him clemency. He later married his high school girlfriend, Tawanna Turner in New Jersey and together they have five children. In 2013, it was reported that Tawanna Turner had filed for divorce but Iverson refuted those claims.
Achievements
Iverson's major achievement was in 2016 when he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. This was a way of recognizing his vast achievement in the Basketball cycle. His achievements include being named 11 times in the NBA All-Star team and getting the 2001 and 2005 NBA MVP award. Nevertheless, Iverson’s achievement in basketball started when he was in high school. He led the Bethel High School basketball team into the state championship and was named the associated press player of the year.
