Black Live Matter (BLM) is a global activist movement that originated from African-American society those campaigns against systematic racism and violence towards black people. This paper focuses on social media presence in BLM. Shifting away from street protests, Black Lives Matter engages a new tactic of social media in Trump’s era. This essay examines Black Live Matter's connection with collective memory.
The Police brutally murdered Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge outside Triple S Food Mart. A crowd gathered to protest the decision from the Justice Department that declined to punish the officer and as well as holding a vigil too (Parry, Cousineau, Johnson, & Fullagar, 2019). The public gave speeches and held signs and cried and prayed.The scene differed from the one that played recurrently on cable news after the death of Sterling in July 2017, provoking activists to block intersections. Subsequently, the riot police in armored vehicles arrived at the protest scene arresting about 200 demonstrators. Recently policing in the US is a significant issue as people outraged by racial disparities and force in punishment are using Black Lives Matter hashtags to air their grievances.However, activists claim that the movements are in a new phase, one that majorly advocates for policy other than protest. President Trump election came along with policy promoting as opposed to demonstrations
People in the US are experiencing fewer demonstrations.Moreover, people are highly focusing on local setups hashtags that recognize the black communities are under direct attack under the Trump reign in America. The issue galvanizing the black lives matter movement is yet to subside. In July 2017, Police killed 23 unarmed people through shooting, a higher rate relative to 2016, where the Police killed 48 unarmed people through random shooting all year. In the two years out of three people who were killed, one is black. Activists grappled with their antiracism while the political threats to various groups such as Muslims, immigrants, and women saw the need for pushing more progressiveness into the streets in protests quickly.
During interviews majority of Black Lives Matter movement leaders indicated that the presidential elections promoted a reinvented focus on support of various minority groups as and amassed discretionary power oppose an administration that revisited the Obama era efforts to reshape the practice of policing.Leaders hailing from diverse, decentralized movement factions of organizations and individuals that at times clashed Trump presidency reality, forcing a strategy reconsideration. In the Black Lives Matter movement, there was a lot of regrouping, necessitating strategic thinking.
The black activists' initial major convening during the Trump era was in April 2017 when this activist met for speeches, workshops, and marches in Memphis marking Rev Martin Luther King Jr.’S “Beyond Vietnam” speech 50th anniversary (Gray, 2019). The representative for organized labor joined the movement and fought for a wage effort minimum of $15, Muslim rights groups, and immigrant advocacy smattering.
