Raising another mother’s child is a challenging task that requires utmost dedication from the adopting parents. The challenges become even more intense when the adoption has to take place between people of different races. Racial identity shapes people’s lives in several ways and therefore, among the challenges that white adoptive parents face is how they can help their adopted children of color to thrive. The problem is further complicated by the fact that there are more black children in foster care waiting to be adopted than there are black families ready to take them. Despite the compatibility issues raised about cross-racial adoption, black children should not only be limited to adoption by the black parents.
