Introduction
Addiction is a condition where an individual depends on certain substances which cause health problems. The behavior needs to be properly controlled by seeking a medical assistant to assist in overcoming the addiction. Khantzian (2012) indicates that there is need to treat the addictive behavior for a smooth functioning of the individual. There are various theories which are used to explain the state of addiction which are either biological or psychological theories.
Biological Theory: Genetic inheritance theory
Genetic inheritance theory explains addiction as a disorder which is greatly influenced by the genes of a particular individual. According to Richerson and Boyd (2012) the biological process and genetic loading of an individual affects the use of addictive substances. The genes control the feeling of an individual making the individual vulnerable to the use of addictive substances like cigarettes and alcohol. The self-esteem and ability to sustain a strong relationship is influenced by the genes of a person where individuals who are addicted to substances have low self-esteem and are unable to sustain strong relationships. The genes affect the response of an individual after taking alcohol or other addictive substances. This is because the genes stimulate the metabolism of the substances which are consumed by a particular individual. However, Heath et al. (2014) state that the addiction behaviors are not necessary due to the genetic reasons of the individual. The history of the family may have an effect on the consumption of alcohol and other drugs although the addiction mostly is not based on the history of the family.
