There are many ethical challenges facing public health care. The most significant ethical issues or dilemmas discussed in the article revolve around the principle of the common good and respect of persons. The most critical ethical challenge facing health care is lack of agreement between health care professional and the society. It is common for health care professionals to clash with patients and their family members over appropriate treatment decisions. The principle of the common good emphasizes on the conditions of the society and materials obtained for people to achieve human and spiritual wellbeing.
The Catholic church`s social teaching insist that the government and citizens must cooperate and get actively involved in promoting the health and welfare of every individual so that everybody must participate in common good for all. Lack of cooperation may result into a clash between health professionals and the society they serve. This may make the sick to suffer during medication, especially those in critical conditions forced to wait for many days to obtain medication. This occurs when health professionals desire a treatment option that is not acceptable to patients. Sometimes this happens when patients require an alternative diagnosis in cases such as alternative and complementary treatment that health professionals may be consider unacceptable.
The principle of common good encompasses three elements that involve health care provision as a vital element of the common good. The elements include; respect for people, social welfare, security, and peace. The principle of the common good requires health professionals to respect human rights.
