1 Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of the externalization of problems. Choose one treatment approach you have studied and explain how it does or does not encourage externalization.
Different individuals have varying responses when facing a challenge, which is perceived as a negative situation that may positively or negatively impact the person. One of the frequency responses of humans is to externalize the problem, projecting their emotional and mental state towards the environment. In psychology, treatment methods exist to assist the individual in properly handling the situation and minimizing the adverse effects of the consequences of his actions.
Externalizing behaviors are the individual’s internal desires or ideologies that one cannot express explicitly, resulting in diverting negative behavior toward other people. This happens in people who face tremendous life pressures without the company of another who can understand or guide them through their situation to deal with the matter healthily and productively. Studies have shown that people, especially the younger population, who externalize problems have most likely been exposed to a ruthless or inconsiderate environment (i.e., spanking due to making a mistake). Conversely, people exposed to a kind and loving environment have been shown to have significant cognitive, affective, and behavioral engagement levels and are less likely to externalize their problems (Suldo et al., 2019; Martel, 2019).
Externalizing behaviors are connected to their problems internally that they project externally. In connection to the externalization of problems, individuals can observe their issues from an outside perspective, without the influence of their internal well-being. Hence, it reduces the possibility of projecting to other people. Here, the therapist renders an individual naked to the outside stressors that the individuals think only exist internally, allowing the individual to have a different perspective.
