Assessing Teams as a Chief Nursing Officer
You are newly hired as a chief nursing officer (CNO). You are replacing a wildly popular person who retired under pressure from upper administration. You have inherited a "team" of 4 people: Director of Medicine, Director of Surgical Services, Director of Maternal/Child Services and Director of Psychiatric Services. In your first week on the job, each one of them has come to you complaining about the others. There is open conflict among them. None of the divisions are strong in terms of nursing presence: turnover is high, new graduates are leaving about 3-4 months after hire, nursing staff feels their leaders do not trust them and make decisions without any input from them. Your charge upon hire was to "turn to nurse around". The budget is a mess, the physicians have complained that they do not trust their instructions are being followed correctly, and morale is at an all-time low. You have decided your first action will be to build a team, either with the current occupants in the position or with others. Describe how you will manage this: how will you assess the team; what kind of a team do you want and why; how will you address the weaknesses in the team; how will you manage the team conflict. What is your timeline?

I would also focus to manage the conflict in a way that successfully meets the goal of reaching an acceptable solution for all. Individual meetings would also help in assessing personal skills and identify any lacking. The knowledge of skills of each will help in assigning tasks accordingly for teamwork. The personalities of people should be given as much significance as their skills (Winsborough & Chamorro-Premuzic, 2017). Therefore, this should also be kept in mind while dealing with issues.
It is important to include individuals having such traits that will help in the progress of the organization. Those individuals who do not seem to be beneficial for the organization would be replaced (Winsborough & Chamorro-Premuzic, 2017). I would also encourage group meetings as these meeting will help the exchange of ideas and implementation of a plan. These meetings will also help to resolve...
