An Analysis of Two Cautionary Tales

Essay Instructions:

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde paper:
Both Little Red Riding Hood and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are cautionary fables about the dangers of evil. They share a number of similarities but also a number of important differences. Write a 5-Paragraph essay comparing and contrasting these two works (to compare is to bring out similarities and to contrast is to bring out differences; make sure to do both). Be sure to have a clear thesis (appearing at the end of your intro paragraph) that makes an argument about the similarities and differences and what those differences mean.
You may use any version of LRRH, but I would probably advise using either Grimm or "The Company of Wolves." It would be possible to use more than one version but it is certainly not necessary and I wouldn't advise talking about more than two.
Your thesis statement should be a single sentence that states what your argument will be about the relationship between the two works. It should be an assertion of fact, not an intention. In other words, "this paper will examine the differences between the two works" is not a thesis statement. "While LRRH is a cautionary tale for children and Dr. J. is speculative fiction, they share an assumption that unchecked masculinity is dangerous" is a thesis statement.
In terms of paragraphs, each should have a specific focus and those focuses added together should prove your thesis. You should think of the paragraph as a crucial organizing principle in your writing. Each paragraph has its own unique focus, so similar information shouldn't appear in different paragraphs. Relatedly, each paragraph builds on the previous paragraphs(s) to prove your thesis. You can think of each paragraph as a step in a geometric proof.

An Analysis of Two Cautionary Tales
A Company of Wolves (Cow) and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (DJMH) are two Gothic fiction stories characterized by horror, death and some romance. Even though differing in several respects, these two tales have successfully demonstrated the dualistic nature of humanity and how it rocks back and forth between good and evil. A CoW, which forms part of a collection of short stories collectively known as The Bloody Chamber, written in 1979 by English author Angela Carter is a gothic variant of the classic fairytale ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ (LRRH). DJMH is a novel by Robert Stevenson, written in 1886, that narrates the thrilling tale of a respectable man called Dr. Jekyll who has a sinister alter ego known as Mr. Hyde, a truly diabolical version of Dr. Jekyll that manifests when he consumes a certain potion.
These two stories demonstrated the dual nature of man. In CoW, the werewolf that assails Little Red on her way to see her grandmother is first a symbolic depiction of men’s predatory nature. For instance, the werewolf wants to sexually assault Red after eating her grandmother. Second, when these werewolves are killed they assume their former human forms. “That…wavering howl has…sadness in it…as if the beasts would love to be less beastly” (Carter, 1979). This quote from the story humanizes their despair. In The Strange Case, the struggle of good versus evil in Dr. Jekyll is an allegory to the battle that members of society daily face, who each have a choice. In both stories, characters literally morph into animals, Hyde being described as ape-like and deformed. Evil is inhuman.
Violence is another theme in both stories. In LRRH, a man is about to consummate his marriage on his wedding night. Seeking leave to relieve himself in the forest he disappears and never returns. His wife remarries and starts a family. Her first husband returns as a werewolf and angry that his “whore” wife remarried bites off the leg of their firstborn child (Carter, 1979). The second husband...
