Gravest Threat to Colleges. Freedom of Expression in American Collages

Essay Instructions:

Read the Scott Bass and Mary Clark article, “The Gravest Threat to Colleges Comes From Within”.
Compose a persuasive essay response (minimum 500 words, maximum 600 words) that provides and supports your opinion (argument, claim) specifically about the light green highlighted sections of the article.
One of the highlighted sections contains four questions. Part of your essay response should reflect your answers to the two questions highlighted in yellow, and the answers are not “yes” or “no” answers. Elaborate. 
Read “A Word about the Thesis” in the course “Handouts” section. The thesis for Formal Essay 1 must be underlined in the introductory paragraph of the essay.
In the essay, provide at least two direct quotations, at least one by the authors and one direct quotation by the author of a second online source is required. Both quotations must be at least two complete lines of text.
The total number of lines of text for direct quotations (accumulative) may not exceed eight. Make sure that the text of your essay includes an in-text citation for both quotations.
CAUTION: Quotations should never be included in the introductory paragraph or the concluding paragraphs.
In the Works Cited section of your essay, use and cite the Bass and Clark online source and the other online source. Your other online source must have an author, and it must have a full date (day, month, year). View the example Bass and Clark full citation below.
Begin the Works Cited section on the page following the last page of your essay. The page must be titled Works Cited centered at the top of the page, followed by the citations.
The Works Cited page must be numbered. For example, if the last page of the text of your essay is p. 2, then the Works Cited page will begin on p. 3. The Works Cited page is not a separate document, but it is not part of the word count requirement. 
Paragraph divisions provide transition, clarity, and organization to an essay. The essay must include a minimum of five, well-developed paragraphs: introductory paragraph that includes the thesis, three supporting paragraphs (minimum), and a concluding paragraph.
When you review the model essay in the “Handouts and Course Documents” section, notice that there is one short quote (from research) in the paper. Most of the writing in the paper is created by the student, not quoted from another source.
Essays in which a large part is quoted material are not acceptable. I want your writing based on your research.
For assignments in this course involving research, avoid using sources that have already done the research for you. These sources include encyclopedias, quotation Websites, Yahoo Answers, Ask.com, About.com, Wikipedia and other Wiki sources, social publications such as People Magazine, Jet Magazine, other social and “Give-Me-an-Answer” Websites, and Weblogs (blogs). Instead, do some serious research. Dictionaries, The Holy Bible, and other reference sources may be used only as tertiary sources in connection with other credible published online sources less than five years old. Do not define or use the dictionary as a source unless you are providing an unusual definition of a word. Assume that your audience possesses a vocabulary. Since this is not a course in law, do not use the JSL databases.

Freedom expression is a right that should be afforded to students and is paramount in maintaining peace in colleges between the faculty and students. The huge diversity in the institutions makes the implementation of this requirement very complicated as there is a need to maintain a balance between the level of freedom and the core values of the college. Collages in America admit students from all walks of life, and they contribute to diversity through their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and age. Each group deserves a voice, and it is the mandate of the college to provide one; however, the main question is how much leeway should the students be allowed without entirely compromising the structures and equality in the school. Collages are built on rules and customs that everyone is supposed to adhere to, consequently promoting equality. It is a complicated matter to balance between offering students complete freedom or having rules for the general good.
Matters of free expression are bound to elicit heated debates in any social gathering or public space, and college is no different. The diversity in the students means that they group themselves depending on what they stand for conforming to the behavior and beliefs of the group. The conflict arises because every group has different views on matters and expect the school to meet their demands. This scenario is the opposite effect the colleges expected to achieve by promoting diversity on campuses.
