Moby Dick is perhaps one of the most well-known stories in the world. Its sheer significance and intrigue have created a tremendous emotional appeal have left a significant imprint upon its readers. Nonetheless, contrary to what most people believe, the story presents a juxtaposition of the idea of equality between individuals upon an exploitative trade – whaling. Specifically, the author believes that the story shows that inequality is present between humans and between man and its nature. Accordingly, such juxtaposition and emphasis on our human nature are presented through symbolism throughout the plot.
Equality within Inequality
The story of Moby Dick initially shows that human beings are generally part of an unequal society. Although it was not explicitly shown, the characters were used symbols of different social classes and characteristics that reflect humankind's social conditions. For example, Ishmael was regarded as the 'outcast,' Fedallah as the symbol of evil and greed, while Queequeg as the good or the pure. Other symbolisms reflect the social condition by ascribing humankind's different personalities to each of the characters involved. Nonetheless, one of the main symbolisms to which each of the characters (regardless of their characters) ascribe is the idea of Moby Dick.
