The video that I found interesting explains the four main techniques; woodcut, etching, lithography, and screenprint. In the woodcut, the artist uses sharp tools to draw a design on a plank of wood and then inks the surface with a brayer and paper sheet is placed over it. The bock is then run through a printing press to transfer the image. In etching, a metal is covered with a waxy surface first. A sharp tool is used to draw incisions on the wax ground and the plate is dipped in etchant that bites the exposed metal. This leaves behind lines in the plate. The plate is inked and the image transferred just like in woodcut.
In lithography, an image is drawn on a porous image such as limestone and then nitric acid and gum arabic are applied. This transfers the image to the limestone where it is left burned on the surface. A quick cleaning with water is followed by application of greasy ink. The ink is repelled by the water but adheres to grease. A piece of paper is then placed on the surface and with the pressure of printing press, the image is transferred. Screenprint creates prints by using a stencil. In this case, ink is pushed through the stencil against the surface of the paper by the use of a squeegee. In this case, one requires a squeegee, a frame, mesh fabric, and a stencil. A cut stencil is placed on the surface to be printed.
