Should American Citizens be required to vote in the National Elections?
The greatest gift that man has is freedom of choice coupled with democracy. Whether a person decides to vote or not is a right, and he or she should not be compelled to arrive at such decision. Nations that have achieved democracies have undergone worse history of struggle, bloodshed, and political oppression to achieve it. If a nation has its citizens, who are free to decide on their own on the way they should govern themselves then such a nation honors democracy. However, it is sad to note that other nations such as Belgium and Australia compelled people to vote in order as a way of strengthening their democracy. This is oppression. Therefore, I would prefer USA citizens voting at their free will in the national elections.
One of the fundamentals rights of a citizen is the right to vote. Therefore, compelling citizens to vote in a national election against their will changes the right to a civic duty. Remember the right to vote or not to vote is a fundamental which allows people to "freely" choose their political representatives (Text 4, line 15; Text 2, line 20). Thus, it is a denial of freedom of choice.
The proponents of mandatory voting idea state that the USA and UK experience low voter turnout and the poor and the minority can never be heard. This idea is misguided since the citizens have the right not to vote and by doing so, they have communicated to the nation about their feeling.
