Hurricanes and tornadoes are some of the most fierce and devastating meteorological processes known to man. The main difference between the two is that hurricanes are formed over water while tornadoes occur over land (Adeli, 2017). Over the years, there have been numerous happenings of the two all over the world. To effectively grasp the impact and understand their occurrence, we will concentrate on a hurricane that occurred in Miami in 1926. It is commonly known as the Great Miami Hurricane. This is one of the most significant tropical cyclones that the south of Florida and the United States, in general, has experienced. It had extensive damages to Miami, the United States Gulf Coast and the Bahamas.
The cyclone is said to have originated from the Atlantic Ocean, precisely the central part of it, on 11th September 1926. The intensity of the cyclone intensified as it moved west-northwest, eventually reaching the power of a hurricane on 12th September. During that time, the weather bureau depended on reports from ships for information about impending storms. They got wind of an encounter with the hurricane on 15th September (Reyes, 2017). At this time, the intensity of the tropical cyclone had reached that of a major hurricane and was now along the northern regions of the Virgin Islands. The build-up of strength continued with the storm reaching its peak intensity on the 16th. The storm had now approached Turks and Caicos and was strong enough to e termed as a category four hurricane. This intensity was maintained as the storm reached the Bahamas on 18th. Although the weather bureau issued the warning, it did very little to prepare the people of the impending disaster since only a few had access to radios.
